Are you the CEO of Your Career?

If not, then why not?

Those days when you could count on your organisation to act as both your co-pilot and your sponsor for personal growth are long over. Now, it's all about taking control and investing in your own development.

Breaking the Parent–Child Paradigm

Too often, employees sit back, expecting their organisation to hand out opportunities like party favours. While many companies claim to be supportive, the reality is that internal programmes are frequently lacklustre and outdated. Thankfully, platforms such as LinkedIn Learning and Udemy for Business have revolutionised professional development, offering cost-effective and diverse courses at scale.

And don’t get me wrong—I’ve benefited greatly from organisation-funded development programmes, for which I’m very grateful. However, I was never reluctant to invest my own time and money. That’s where the true power lies.

The learning landscape is more accessible than ever—just think of the endless tutorials on YouTube! Yet, with so many options, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Being intentional about your learning journey is essential.

This week I was inspired by this podcast with Chalene Hanson, Global HR Director, Burberry. She drops some serious gems in this, if this episode doesn’t give you the boost to seize your professional journey, then nothing will!

Remember: if you’re not actively learning, you’re not just standing still—you’re falling behind.

Own Your Journey: Proactivity is Key

Lately, most of my messages aren’t about reverse mentoring (alas!), but rather about the career choices and decision points that accelerated my journey.

Questions like:

  • How did you progress so quickly?

  • Where can I find a mentor?

  • When should I get my first coach?

  • What investments truly advance your career?

  • What do you do with an unsupportive manager?

These queries inspired me to launch my Power to Pivot Course, a seven-week programme designed to help you reclaim control over your career and your life. No more waiting for someone else to decide your future—be the master of your own destiny.

Balancing Corporate Ambitions with Entrepreneurial Spirit

I get a lot of queries from those ready to go all in on their own businesses, I wholeheartedly support this. However, I also champion pushing yourself within the corporate field first. A robust corporate track record not only builds your skillset but also provides a safety net, ensuring that if you ever want—or need—to return, you’re already ahead of the game. In today’s climate of frequent reorganisations and redundancies, proactively managing your career isn’t just smart; it’s essential.

Empowering Organisations: Workshops to Lead the Way

For organisations determined to cultivate a workforce of proactive career CEOs, I run bespoke day and half-day workshops designed to ignite that very spark. These sessions deliver actionable strategies that encourage employees to own their professional journey. And don’t just take my word for it—the feedback from industry giants like Nasdaq and AMEX has been nothing short of stellar.

If your organisation is keen to empower your team and foster a culture where every employee feels like the CEO of their own career, let’s have a chat.
