Closing the Year with Courage and Clarity
‘Tis the Season
We’ve made it – the last week of “work” for 2024. Let’s be honest; not much business is going to be done next week. I hope you’ll take this time to ease into the season, reconnect with colleagues, send some lovely notes to clients, share a few laughs, and—most importantly—dodge any last-minute panics. 🎄✨
What a journey it’s been. It was a year of challenges, unexpected twists, and moments that tested our resilience in ways we didn’t anticipate. If you’re feeling a bit drained, know this: you’re not alone. This year stretched us in ways we never imagined, but here we are. 💪🏾
And if you have some spare time and haven’t managed to yet - I invite you to take some time to complete this reflection exercise.
What an Intense Week!
For me, this past week has been nothing short of extraordinary. Earlier in the week, I attended Bloomberg’s inaugural Women, Money & Power Conference in London. The absolute highlight? Meeting the legendary Sheila Johnson. She was gracious, inspiring, and even more impressive in person—a true powerhouse of wisdom and elegance.
Being surrounded by so many incredible women making big moves left me feeling deeply motivated to keep contributing in whatever way I’m called to. 🌟
Now, I’m writing to you from a very sunny Washington, DC. ☀️ I’ve just wrapped up a few mind-expanding days as part of the Diplomatic Courier’s World in 2050 Innovation Retreat.
As a Brain Trust member, I’ve had the privilege of sharing insights on how we can collectively ensure a better future. Alongside a group of extraordinary thinkers, I delved into exploring what the future could hold. My mind is still racing, filled with ideas and possibilities I’m working to process.
Here’s the exciting bit: the future is in our hands. We have a choice—to actively shape it or simply let it happen. There’s no room for bystanders anymore; it’s time for all of us to step up and take the wheel. 🚗✨
Let’s begin with some introspection.
Reframing This Season
The end of the year can mean different things to different people. For some, it’s a joyful time of celebration and rest. For others, it can bring up complicated feelings, reflection, or even sadness.
For me, this season has become about intentionality. I’ve had to reprogramme my thinking and redefine what this period means to me. And one lesson that has stuck with me is this…
Movement creates momentum
Have you noticed? When you decide to move—whether it’s mentally, emotionally, or physically—it feels as though the universe conspires to support you. Momentum builds, carrying you forward. But here’s the thing: you’ve got to lean into it. No half-hearted attempts will do. It requires bravery, commitment, and a willingness to embrace the unknown. 🌍💫
Four years ago this very week, my life looked drastically different. My first TED Talk had just launched, but my personal life had crumbled. I made a bold decision to move—literally. I sold my “idyllic” countryside home, packed everything into storage, and downsized to a magic-filled, one-bedroom flat in London. It wasn’t just a physical move; it was a reset, a decision to choose myself.
December 2020
It wasn’t easy. In fact, it was terrifying. 😰 But it was also liberating. Since then, I’ve committed to unapologetically being myself, pursuing joy, and walking away from situations that no longer serve me. That choice—over and over again—has been the most empowering thing I’ve ever done.
I often get asked where my courage comes from. The truth is, for a long time, I lived a life of compromise. I gave so much of myself away that I barely recognised the woman in the mirror. And that came at a deep personal cost. Now, I refuse to live that way. 🌈
Your Invitation🎯
This season, I invite you to reflect. Take stock of where you are, where you want to be, and what it will take to bridge the gap. One of the most transformative visioning exercises I’ve embraced is the From – To framework. It’s simple but powerful:
Place your diagram somewhere visible—on your desk, your mirror, your fridge. Let it evolve. Life is messy, and plans rarely go as expected, but this exercise will keep you moving forward. Momentum will build, but you have to meet it halfway. 🛤️
Some resources for you
Dr Tara Swart is one of my favourites for rewiring the brain.
I fell in love with Elizabeth Gilbert a long time ago and I am still angling for my Eat, Pray, Love adventure. She continues to inspire me and this podcast with Tim Ferris really hit the mark, I hope you find it thought-provoking too.
Your Next Chapter
As we close out the year, I’d love to hear what you’re working on. What’s your next big move? If five of you share your From – To diagrams with me, I promise to share mine in return.
This journey of self-improvement is one we’re all on together. Let’s hold each other accountable, encourage each other, and keep pushing forward.
Here’s to choosing yourself, embracing the unknown, and creating the life you deserve. Let’s step boldly into 2025—with purpose, with momentum, and with courage.
With Peace, Love and Determination
Parting Question: What’s one bold move you’re ready to make to shape your future—and how will you take the first step?"
Before you go….
